CHE remembers Leendert van Oostrum

Dear Fellow Home Educators

Leendert van Oostrum, a home education father, pioneer, counsellor, and activist, sadly passed away on 13 October 2016.

In the early 1990’s, Leendert was a major player in legalizing home education in South Africa. He founded the Pestalozzi Trust, the South African Legal Defence Fund, as well as various home education associations nationwide and penned much of the law concerning Home Education in the RSA.

leendert-van-oostrum-715x400His thesis on Home Education in South Africa received a post graduate qualification (M.Ed Cum Laude), the first in this field.

A well known face in the Courts, provincial and national parliaments and the High Court, Leendert tirelessly testified, challenged and educated, never ceasing to fight for the freedom and sacred rights of parents to raise and educate their own children. Leading by example by successfully home educating his own three daughters.

On an international level, he was a speaker at the Global Home Education Conference in Rio De Janeiro. Helping to organise it and connecting Home Educators world wide. For years, he appeared on TV programmes and radio talk shows, discussing and defending the topic.

Furthermore, on ground level, he encouraged parents, informed them of their rights, supported and became a friend to all who ventured into this controversial field. Famously drawing big crowds at Home Education Expos and Talks. Considered by all to be an expert, thousands gleaned from his wisdom and bold instruction.

Home educators in South Africa are truly indebted to Leendert for the role he has played throughout the years.

As a homeschooling community we hope and pray that a suitable replacement will be found to take up the baton and continue the good work which Leendert has done faithfully over the years.

We sincerely thank him in his absence, and his family for the sacrifices and commitment in assisting him to fulfill this role for the benefit of others.

Kind Regards
Victor Sabbe

Home School Expo 2016, a great day for all!

So the Home School Expo for 2016 finally came. We could not have asked for better weather on the day. Overall, the event was a resounding success! We thank everyone who came down on the day to support us. We also thank all the exhibitors for their excellent stands full of valuable information to the Home School Community in Cape Town and a far. We also thank the Josh Gen church for the venue, and all the CHE Committee members who put in many hours of hard work to make the day special.

This year we shook things up a little. We used an event’s organizer, Kragdag, to take care of planning and running the event. We also tried a new venue in Sunningdale on the West Coast. We have had great feedback and will aspire to build on our successes and keep improving for next year, making the Expo the de facto Home-schooling event of your yearly calendar.

Here are some photos giving you a glimpse of the day.

Support CHE through the MySchool Program

Did you know that you can support the Cape Home Educators (CHE) with every swipe of your MySchool card from buying your groceries at Woolworths to buying books online at Loot?

In 2016 CHE decided to not have a membership fee of R180 per family per year. This means that we are dependent on donations and the income from the MySchool Program.

By nominating Cape Home Educators as your MySchool card beneficiary, you help us to:

 Not ask a membership fee.
 Engage with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) regarding the laws and policies that govern home education and to continually strive for home education freedom.
 Use funds to cover representatives’ travel costs (flights, accommodation, car rental, etc.) for attending meetings with the DBE, home education conferences, and expos.
 To cover our running costs such as website domain hosting, podcasts hosting, educational expos, etc.
 Investigate and research home education developments both nationally and internationally as the need arise.
 To help promote home education by contributing funds towards home education expos (e.g. the African Home Education Indaba) and the filming of the Home Education Documentary.

CHE is a volunteer-run organisation. The members of the committee does not receive any payment for the fulfilling of their duties. We need your help in serving the home education community.
